Boundless beauty at the foot of the mountain. Discover breath-taking architecture and a history beyond compare
If you come to Umbria be sure not to miss a tour of the city of Gubbio and one of our guided excursions is certainly the best way to discover its treasures and its magic.
The tour in the company of our guides will begin with the 13th-century Chiesa di San Francesco which displays the simplicity and austerity typical of the Franciscan order. The church, among the first to be built and dedicated to the memory of the saint, is located in the ancient medieval market square, Piazza dei Quaranta Martiri, dedicated to the 40 victims killed by the German military during World War II. A few metres away from the Church stands the Logge dei Tiratori, a 17th -century construction championed by the ‘Corporazione dell’Arte della Lana’ (Guild of the Art of Wool) which was used by merchants to ‘pull the clothes’, that is, to make the woollen garments dry. The tour will proceed through the characteristic medieval alleyways, from which you can admire picturesque panoramic views, until you reach the imposing and majestic building that towers over the city: Palazzo dei Consoli. It stands in the centre of the city of Gubbio in Piazza Grande, which also houses Palazzo del Podestà. You can then admire the Gothic-style Cathedral of the Saints Mariano and Giacomo Martiri, also known as the Duomo di Gubbio: built on an ancient Romanesque church of the 13-14th century – of which some remains can still be seen – it houses the relics of Saints Giacomo and Mariano. We will then arrive at another symbol of the city of Gubbio, Palazzo Ducale, with its marvellous Renaissance-style exteriors, the only exception to the medieval style that otherwise characterises practically the whole city.
If you choose the full-day tour option
With the full-day tour option, you will continue the tour with a visit to the Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo, perched on Mount Igino at a height of 850 metres a.s.l. You can appreciate a stunning panorama from there or from the inside Palazzo dei Consoli. The Museo Diocesano and the interiors of the Palazzo Ducale, an elegant example of Renaissance architecture, are also of worth seeing.
We will be moving mostly on foot so we recommend comfortable clothing, sun glasses or a hat for the sun in warmer times of year, and a anorak or a warm hat in the colder seasons.
