Guided Tour of Terni

The harmonious interplay of history and modernity, tradition and everyday life

Discover the lively city of Terni, where classical and medieval elements coexist in perfect harmony with Renaissance and industrial styles. Learn to appreciate the city in the company of our expert guides, who will show you its most interesting and characteristic places.

Your tour will start from the city’s main square, admiring the beautiful Renaissance style of the ancient Palazzo Comunale. We will pass another jewel of the historic centre, Palazzo Spada, with its majestic and imposing appearance, its Renaissance-style facade and the marvellous frescoes in its interior. We can then admire the Chiesa di San Salvatore, the oldest Church in Terni once called the Tempio del sole; it will amaze you with its longitudinal structure incorporated into a cylindrical structure terminating in a majestic dome.

Walking through the city we’ll walk along the characteristic Via Cavour and the tour will continue with a visit to the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, which is also the city’s Duomo. Notice the columns and arches that distinguish its facade. The Chiesa di Sant’Alò, although more modest in style, has a fascinating character that easily captures your attention. In fact it stands upon an ancient building dedicated to the goddess Cybele and contains numerous frescoes in its interior.

The Anfiteatro Fausto, the best preserved Roman monument in Terni, is also worthy of note and still stages theatrical performances and other events. While still in the historic centre you can see another typical church, that of San Francesco, with its particularly elegant bell tower.

Despite the simplicity and the inconspicuous character of the facade, the ancient Chiesa di San Pietro fascinates with its characteristic rose window, numerous decorations and the frescoes preserved inside it, including a wonderful Dormitio Virginis.

If the history of Terni has captured your imagination, you can also include in your tour a visit to the Museo Comunale CAOSCentro Arti Opificio Siri, where you can expand your knowledge of the city in the two sections that make up the museum, the pre-Roman and the Roman sections. The Museum is located in what was the ancient Siri chemical factory, which has now been redeveloped and has become a new symbol of the city. If you want to continue exploring the city of Terni or as an alternative to sightseeing in the city, you can visit the Scavi della città romana di Carsulae (excavations of the Roman city of Carsulae), a haunting archaeological area that will take you back in time and immerse you imaginatively in the life of that Roman city.
