Guided tour of Orvieto

Wander amongst the countless, stunning monuments and relive the town’s most extraordinary history and traditions

If you are interested in the charming town of Orvieto, then set aside some time to discover its most charming and surprising places with the help of our guided tour.

You will begin the guided tour of Orvieto by visiting the remains of the Rocca di Albornoz (fortress), which stands on the highest part of the town and from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Orvieto Valley. Moving to the centre of the town, you’ll see the pretty Pozzo di San Patrizio (well), which will enable you to go down to a depth of about 50 metres thanks to an unusual spiral-shaped staircase; its large illuminated windows and its circular shape seem to lead down into the circles of hell. Not far away, we will pass the remains of the ancient Tempio etrusco di Belvedere. We’ll also stop at the Duomo di Orvieto, a jewel of Gothic architecture that has a facade that’s covered in the most amazingly detailed decoration.

Inside, in the transept, we’ll see the Cappella di San Brizio with its decorations, executed by well-known artists such as Beato Angelico, Benozzo Gozzoli, Pietro di Nicola Baroni and Luca Signorelli, with his precious fresco of the ‘Giudizio Universale’ (Last Judgment). Continuing your walk through the town, we will get lost in the beautiful alleys, suggestive squares and characteristic places. You will be enchanted in front of stunning panoramic views. Continuing the visit, we will arrive in Piazza della Repubblica, where you can admire the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea e Bartolomeo and the Palazzo Comunale. The medieval public buildings, including the Palazzo del Popolo, are also incredibly beautiful.

If, instead, you want to spend the whole day getting to know the town, your itinerary will also include visits to other monuments, such as the Museo Archeologico Claudio Faina, which exhibits significant finds related to the Etruscan people or the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which houses finds unearthed in more recent times. We will also explore the evocative Necropoli di Crocifisso del Tufo where you can see remains of Etruscan culture and art. We will conclude the tour with some sites in Orvieto sotteraneo (Underground Orvieto); you’ll find it fascinating to discover the innumerable tunnels and cavities that have been dug into the rock over the millennia and which make this town so unique and extraordinary.
