Olive oil and wine on the shores of Lake Trasimeno

Back to the exploration

Olive oil and wine on the shores of Lake Trasimeno

Cycling along the shores of the lake, among olive trees and magical landscapes

69 km in length, this moderately difficult route starts from the municipal swimming pools in Castiglione del Lago and winds its way around Lake Trasimeno. Set among softly rolling hills and cultivated plains, this lake is the fourth largest in Italy and the area surrounding it is one of the most beloved by foreign tourists for its great naturalistic attractions. Starting from an altitude of about 260 m in the company of our guides, we will cycle for several kilometres along secondary roads between pine forests and olive groves reaching 319 m a.s.l. in Puntabella, a splendid panoramic viewing point providing an exhilarating view of the lake. We will then pass by Passignano, an captivating example of medieval urban architecture that is typical of Umbria’s ancient heritage and is crammed with exquisite buildings, including the 15th-century Chiesa di San Rocco. From here we can take a ferry over to two of the three lovely islands on Lake Trasimeno, Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese. Continuing along the shores of the lake, we’ll pass through the pretty fishing village of San Feliciano, where you can still breathe in the atmosphere of bygone times and where there’s a relic of San Feliciano, the saint who lends his name to the place. Continuing along our route, and before returning to Castiglione, we’ll tackle a small hill with a 500-m climb that will take us up to Poggio di Braccio, where there is still a post house dating back to 1500. Here you’ll be able to see another breath-taking view of the lake. The last leg of the route includes a short climb to the historic centre of Castiglione del Lago, an ancient Etruscan village whose historical and artistic treasures definitely deserve to be seen.
