Montefalco and the roads in the Sagrantino winescape

Back to the exploration

Montefalco and the roads in the Sagrantino winescape

Cycling through vineyards and magical landscapes

This moderately-difficult route begins a stone’s throw from Montefalco’s 13th-century walls, in the hamlet known as the ‘Ringhiera dell’Umbria’ (The Balcony of Umbria) for its superb location, providing the stunning views that make this central part of the region so famous. Montefalco is also included in the ‘Borghi più belli d’Italia’ (Most beautiful villages in Italy) and is known for Sagrantino, the wine that has made Umbria famous throughout the world, as well as for its delicious olive oil and the rare beauty of the hills that surround it. Starting at 457 m a.s.l., our tour will head down towards Spoleto and then continue in the plains for a few kilometres until we reach the picturesque Fonti del Clitunno, a garden with crystal clear, emerald-hued waters along Via Flaminia between Spoleto and Foligno, an ideal spot for a relaxing break. After retracing a short section of our itinerary and then continuing straight on for several kilometres, we will see Castello di Pissignano on our right and the charming village of Trevi, perched on a hill covered in dense olive groves and dotted with towers, churches and palazzi. Accompanied by our friendly and reliable guides, we will cross the river Teverone and take the cycle path that will lead us to the foot of Montefalco. The route will end with 5 kilometres slightly uphill, a gradient of 5-6%, until we return to the starting point.
