Guided Tour of Città di Castello

Explore Città di Castello, the ancient town founded by the Umbri people which later became a Roman possession, and discover the Renaissance charm of its characteristic scenery, whose praises where extolled by Pliny the Younger. Accompanied by our highly-experienced guides, your tour will start from the wonderful Giardini del Cassero. In the heart of the city you can admire the beautiful Piazza Matteotti, and in Piazza Gabriotti you will see the marvellous Cathedral or Duomo dedicated to Saints Florido and Amanzio, which is Città di Castello’s glittering jewel of Renaissance art.

Piazza Gabriotti will also give you a view of Palazzo dei Priori or Palazzo Comunale, an imposing and elegant public building and one of the most important in Umbria, even if unfortunately it was left unfinished. A few metres away from the Palazzo Comunale, we will find the Chiesa di San Domenico, which externally appears very austere and overpowering due to its large size and houses numerous frescoes inside. You will also be struck by the Chiesa di San Francesco, due to its massive size, its Gothic external style and its Baroque interior. Its architectural and pictorial works include the Cappella Vitelli and ‘L’Incoronazione della Vergine’ by Giorgio Vasari.

We will then walk through the picturesque alleys of Rione San Giacomo, which is located in the northern part of the city within the new city walls.

You can discover other special aspects of Città di Castello by adding the beautiful Palazzo Vitelli to your itinerary or by seeing the Collezione Burri at Palazzo Albizzini and an extremely wide-ranging collection of the works of Burri, who was one of the leading figures in the contemporary art world, at the Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco (Former Tobacco-drying facility). You will also find interesting works exhibited at the Museo del Duomo and the Collezione Tessile di Tela Umbra (Umbrian Textile Collection) at Palazzo Tommasini, which houses masterpieces of the art of weaving, an activity rooted in Umbrian tradition. You can round off your tour in Città di Castello by visiting the Museo delle Arti Grafiche and the Centro di Documentazione delle Tradizioni Popolari, which houses one of the first collections of objects and materials related to agriculture, artisanal craft activities, housing and peasant life, or by admiring the Mostra dei Mestieri artigiani in miniatura (Exhibition of craft trades in miniature form) by Silvio Bambini, exhibiting incredibly realistic miniature replicas of craft workshops.
