Trekking to Ferentillo: from San Michele to the mummies

Trekking to Ferentillo is an intense hiking experience in the heart of the Valnerina.

The highlights of this tour for hikers are many and varied: from the shady woods – unspoiled and rich in biodiversity – to the village of Colle Olivo, a small, picturesque hamlet overlooked by the ancient Eremo di San Michele. This hermitage, located along the legendary Saint Michael’s line and now a ruin, represents the apex of trekking to Ferentillo: it overlooks the ghost town of Umbriano, a thousand-year-old sentry post, which can be reached further downhill, revealing itself in all its splendour. Heading back down to the valley, and walking along the Way of St Francis that flanks the river Nera, the route then turns back to Ferentillo, where a visit to the most mysterious place in Umbria awaits: the Museo delle Mummie (Museum of Mummies).

TECHNICAL INFO: The route is circular and extends largely on paths, with portions on dirt roads. The surface underfoot is in good condition but there are some bumpy sections and very occasional muddy patches in the case of recent rain. Many sections are exposed to winds. Along the route there is only one water supply point and very few sheltered areas in case of sudden rain.
