The hiking of ‘Monte Subasio’ mountain range

The hiking of ‘Monte Subasio’ mountain range

Following in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi, hiking on Monte Subasio through boundless clearings with breath-taking views

The mountain rises between the Umbria valley and the Chiascio valley, embracing Assisi between its slopes and safeguarding it for centuries: that mountain, called Monte Subasio, is as imposing as it is solitary. It seems to have been placed there as if to warn the weary traveller crossing the valley that the tough trek is about to start again, the Apennines are looming again. And it seems to have a spirit all of its own. It is a source of fascination for all those who visit it for the first time, but it’s equally important for the locals, who live and breathe it every day and admire it to the full.

This trek will take you on a voyage of discovery of this mountain, starting from Stazzi, where the highest vegetation begins to disappear making room for the clearings that host herds of cows and horses. We’ll be at about 1100 metres above sea level but the route heads straight to the top, crossed by the path that we will be taking which will lead us to an amazing panoramic viewing point. You’ll have the Umbria, Chiascio and Tiber valleys right there in front of you, and if you look down far enough you’ll see Assisi, as if it were at your feet. All around you will see almost endless pastures. One of nature’s most fabulous showpieces!

The circular route or ‘ring’ is about 12 kilometres long with an altitude gain of about 400 metres, so it’s suitable for everyone, as long as you’re in good physical shape.
