From Panicale towards the hills of Perugia

Back to the exploration

From Panicale towards the hills of Perugia

From the shores of lake Trasimeno, setting off from one of the most beautiful villages and heading out towards Perugia’s hills

This moderately difficult route starts from the historic centre of Panicale, a picturesque medieval village that is part of the association ‘Borghi Più Belli d’Italia’ (Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages) and has been awarded an ‘Orange Flag’ (recognition of excellence) by the Italian Touring Club. Leaving Panicale behind, we’ll start a steep climb and after less than a kilometre we will find ourselves on a traffic-free country road that will take us to the small hill where the Castle of Montalera is located. This ancient fortress still preserves its crenelated towers, defensive walls and remains of a drawbridge. We will then take a state road and reach Sant’Arcangelo, and then take a dirt track for a few kilometres and, in the direction of Mugnano, we’ll come to a steep downhill stretch of about 300 meters. We will then continue in the direction of Fontignano, a small village where the remains of the famous painter from Città della Pieve, Pietro Vannucci (known in Italy as ‘Il Perugino’) are kept and then towards Città della Pieve, covering a stretch of very busy road. Our itinerary will then continue on lovely minor roads that will lead us to the foot of the Santuario delle Grondici and, after having crossed a small stone bridge, we will go into Tavernelle. At this point we will press on again near Panicale where the last bit of tough cycling await us, a climb with hairpin bends towards the historic centre of the village. From here, if your legs are up to it, ask our expert guides to continue towards Paciano, a small village immersed in an area rich in forests of holm oaks, oaks and chestnut trees. We look forward to you joining us on this unforgettable adventure!
