Hiking of Orvieto on the circular cliff route

A themed hiking tour of Orvieto, taking in the necropolis and the tuff walls

This themed hiking of Orvieto, the Etruscan capital and seat of the great federal sanctuary, takes a walking route around the necropolis and the city’s tuff walls. From the Fortezza Albornoz, which you’ll reach via a funicular line, we’ll proceed along the ring of the cliff that runs along the tufaceous promontory. We will arrive at the Etruscan Necropolis of Crocefisso del Tufo and then resume our walk up to the southern slope of the cliff. A variant leads straight to the cathedral: we will then cross the city along the ancient decuman line as far as the paths that go down towards the valley.

The itinerary will take you exclusively along paved and well-trodden paths without any slippery areas. Even in case of recent rain, there should be no muddy stretches. There are frequent ups and downs, with medium to low-level slopes: only sporadic portions are steep, but the long final section when we leave the city is fairly steep downhill. However, the areas exposed to the winds are rare and the itinerary is mostly sunny, with some areas in the shade. There is a refreshment point along the way, while water supplies are only available in the last part of the excursion. At the end, there will be a final stop in Orvieto, where there are obviously shops, bars and restaurants.
