The building dates back to the 13th century and was originally Gothic in style before being completely transformed into the neoclassical style in 1870 by the architect <em>Lardoni<\/em> from Perugia. He added a bell tower by adapting the town\u2019s previous ancient four-sided tower, which tradition has it belonged to the rich Corciano feudatories, the <em>Della Corgna<\/em> and the <em>Montemelini<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The building\u2019s elegant facade is in pink and white stone, while inside it has a single nave with a raised presbytery, central apse and several altars, each decorated with outstanding works of art.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t miss the imposing altarpiece that decorates the main altar: it was created by <em>Perugino<\/em> in 1513 and depicts <strong>\u201cl&#8217;Assunzione della Vergine\u201d <\/strong>(The Assumption of the Virgin) and the <strong>\u201cGonfalone della Peste<\/strong>\u201d (Banner of the Plague) painted in 1472 by <em>Benedetto di Bonfigli<\/em> depicting the merciful Madonna protecting the inhabitants of the city under her cloak.<\/p>\n<p>Next to these two masterpieces are two minor side altars, dedicated to the Sacro Cuore (Sacred Heart) and the Madonna del Rosario (Madonna of the Rosary).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The church of Santa Maria Assunta is near the main town square, Piazza Coragino.
