{"id":4296,"date":"2019-03-28T13:18:30","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T12:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/?page_id=4296"},"modified":"2019-03-28T13:18:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T12:18:30","slug":"palazzo-di-priori-and-palazzo-del-capitano","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/fortified-villages-in-umbria-rare-hidden-gems\/what-to-see-in-corciano\/palazzo-di-priori-and-palazzo-del-capitano\/","title":{"rendered":"Palazzo di Priori and Palazzo del Capitano"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the village\u2019s main street, (Corso Cardinale Rotelli), near the main square, two very elegant civil buildings dating back to the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century stand side by side: <strong>Palazzo<\/strong> <strong>dei<\/strong> <strong>Priori<\/strong> and <strong>Palazzo<\/strong> <strong>del<\/strong> <strong>Capitano<\/strong> <strong>del<\/strong> <strong>Popolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The exquisiteness of the architecture, in Renaissance style, of both <em>palazzi<\/em> is clear evidence of the political and economic importance enjoyed by Corciano during the late Middle Ages.<\/p>\n<p>The first building, also called <strong>Palazzo<\/strong> <strong>della<\/strong> <strong>Mercanzia<\/strong>, is made of finely-decorated stone blocks that give the building a distinctive white hue. It consists of two floors: the first has four beautiful arches, three of which are sealed, and housed the city market, while the second, upper storey is embellished with a round arched window, takes the form of the large hall where public meetings were held.<\/p>\n<p>The second building, also known as <strong>Palazzo<\/strong> <strong>del<\/strong> <strong>Capitano<\/strong> <strong>del<\/strong> <strong>Contado<\/strong> is built on three levels: the first is made of blocks of white stone and has two beautiful arches, while the other two are built of red brick, decorated with four windows with projecting frames that span the entire length. The building was home to the Captain of the <em>Contado <\/em>(local countryside), a magistrate who was sent by the city of Perugia to all the territories under his jurisdiction and who enjoyed executive and judicial power over the inhabitants of the villages entrusted to him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the village\u2019s main street, (Corso Cardinale Rotelli), near the main square, two very elegant civil buildings dating back to the 15th century stand side by side: Palazzo dei Priori and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo.
