{"id":3981,"date":"2019-03-25T16:46:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T15:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/?page_id=3981"},"modified":"2019-09-03T21:12:20","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T19:12:20","slug":"palazzo-del-capitano","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/todi-eng\/what-to-see-in-todi\/palazzo-del-capitano\/","title":{"rendered":"Palazzo del Capitano"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Palazzo del Capitano <\/strong>(Captain&#8217;s Palace), also called <strong>&#8220;Palazzo Nuovo&#8221; <\/strong>(New Palace), stands out beside <strong>Palazzo del Popolo <\/strong>(People&#8217;s Palace)<strong>. <\/strong>\u00a0Unlike the first and more ancient building, it was built at the end of the 13th century, around 1293, together with <strong>Palazzo dei Priori <\/strong>(Priors&#8217; Palace).<\/p>\n<p>From a structural point of view, the Gothic building consists of three floors: a loggia (open gallery) on the ground floor, three-light and four-light windows supported by small columns and framed by arches and gables on the two upper floors. The architectural peculiarity of the building is its monumental diagonal staircase overlooking <strong>Piazza del Popolo<\/strong> and allowing entrance to both Palaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Palazzo del Capitano <\/strong>currently houses the Municipal offices and museums. The hall of the same name (<strong>sala &#8220;del Capitano&#8221;<\/strong>) on the first floor shields the remains of\u00a0 some frescoes dating back to the 14th century and a section of the <strong>Museo Etrusco-Romano<\/strong> (Etruscan-Roman Museum), where a copy of the renowned <strong>Mars of Todi <\/strong>is kept (the original is at the Vatican Museums).
