{"id":3967,"date":"2019-03-25T16:27:54","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T15:27:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/?page_id=3967"},"modified":"2019-09-03T20:33:09","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T18:33:09","slug":"old-town","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/todi-eng\/what-to-see-in-todi\/old-town\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Town"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Clung to the hill watching the lowland stretch of the River Tiber, the town was described as the most &#8220;<em>ascensional<\/em>&#8221; one of Umbria by the travellers during the early 20th century, because of the pinnacle structure of the bell tower of the <strong>Cathedral <\/strong>(dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) which would represent its architectural triumph. The curvy and winding roads, the narrow areas and the staircases linking the different neighbourhoods make car passage difficult if not impossible. Therefore, you will be pleasantly forced to move in space and time at the pace of a walk, to pick up the details of a rich <strong>Old Town, <\/strong>still well protected and surrounded by the <strong>monumental <\/strong>travertine <strong>walls <\/strong>and the Medieval <strong>Gates: Orvietana, Perugina, Romana and Amerina <\/strong>(or <strong>Fratta<\/strong>)<strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inside the fortified village, <strong>Parco della Rocca <\/strong>is located, the town green lung hosting <strong>St. Fortunato Temple<\/strong> where well-known <strong>Fr\u00e0 Jacopone <\/strong>remains are enshrined. Not far from the ancient Church, the modern <strong>Municipal Theatre, <\/strong>rises up. It was built and inaugurated in the late 19th century. Slightly above, climbing up via Mazzini, you can enjoy the majestic view of <strong>Piazza del Popolo, <\/strong>the throbbing heart of the town, framed by the wonderful <strong>Cathedral<\/strong> on its northern side and by the Municipal Buildings on the other sides: <strong>Palazzo del Capitano <\/strong>or Palazzo Nuovo and <strong>Palazzo del Popolo <\/strong>\u00a0housing the <strong>Municipal Picture Gallery, <\/strong>and <strong>Palazzo dei Priori <\/strong>where the well-known bronze eagle made by <em>Giovanni di Gigliaccio <\/em>in 1339 stands out, as the emblem of the town. Underneath the square surface area, a complex system of tunnels, cisterns and wells of different ages, commonly called &#8220;<strong>Todi underground&#8221; <\/strong>extends roughly five kilometres and lends the town a special look.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, crossing adjacent <strong>Piazza Garibaldi <\/strong>and walking down Corso Cavour to then walk up via Cesia, you will discover a series of other monuments of different ages and cultures, from Roman Pagan to Catholic Medieval and Renaissance ones.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong>Fountain of the Rua (or Cesia Fountain) <\/strong>and <strong>of the Scannabecco <\/strong>(13th century) to the <strong>Churches of St. Filippo <\/strong>(16th century), <strong>of St. Nicol\u00f2 de Criptis <\/strong>(11th century), <strong>of St. Maria in Cammuccia <\/strong>(13th century, where the well-known wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, &#8220;<em>SedesSapientiae<\/em>&#8220;, is kept), <strong>of St. Carlo <\/strong>(13th century) and <strong>of St. Prassede <\/strong>(14th century), up to the still well preserved Roman <strong>Nicchioni<\/strong> (ruins of an ancient Basilica) and <strong>Porta Marzia, <\/strong>you will have no spare time to rest your sight, admiring the huge number of monuments nestled in the small Medieval village to be discovered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clung to the hill watching the lowland stretch of the River Tiber, the town was described as the most &#8220;ascensional&#8221; one of Umbria by the travellers during the early 20th century, because of the pinnacle structure of the bell tower of the Cathedral (dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) which would represent [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":29552,"parent":3950,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v18.4.1 -
