{"id":19735,"date":"2019-08-09T14:12:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-09T12:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/borghi-of-umbria\/cosa-vedere-a-tuoro-sul-trasimeno\/chiesa-di-san-salvatore\/"},"modified":"2019-08-22T12:52:08","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T10:52:08","slug":"chiesa-di-san-salvatore","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/fortified-villages-in-umbria-rare-hidden-gems\/what-to-see-in-tuoro-sul-trasimeno\/chiesa-di-san-salvatore\/","title":{"rendered":"Chiesa di San Salvatore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walking through the streets of the lovely island of <strong>Isola Maggiore<\/strong>, the pearl of Lake Trasimeno and part of the village of Tuoro, you won\u2019t miss the <strong>Chiesa di San Salvatore<\/strong>, with its simple, gentle and welcoming appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The building, which is located on the street of the same name, was built in the <strong>Romanesque style<\/strong> in the 12<sup>th<\/sup> century; a document dating back to 1238 attests to its existence and its subordination to the <em>Abbazzia di Farneta<\/em>, located in Cortona, a town in the province of Arezzo.<\/p>\n<p>The church is modest, both in size and decor; externally you can see a stone <strong>portal<\/strong> decorated with depictions of animals and plants, reminiscent of the portal of the most imposing Pieve Confini di Tuoro (Parish Church), which however has more elaborate and refined decorations. Even a small stone depiction of San Matteo (St Mathew), visible on the facade, has survived to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the church has a single nave, a semi-circular apse and a transept, while there are few traces of the paintings that originally decorated the walls. However, in the apse at the top, on the right, you can see what remains of a 14<sup>th<\/sup>-century <strong>fresco<\/strong> depicting an Angel.<\/p>\n<p>The chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, located on the left side of the church, preserves some <strong>works of art<\/strong> and <strong>sacred objects<\/strong>, including <strong>two wooden statues<\/strong> depicting respectively the <em>Risen Christ<\/em> and <em>St Francis<\/em> and a <strong>tabernacle<\/strong> painted in the Baroque style, which is named after its greatest exponent and founder, <em>Federico Fiori<\/em>, also known as <em>il Barocci<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently the church cannot be visited and is only open for weddings or special celebrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Walking through the streets of the lovely island of Isola Maggiore, the pearl of Lake Trasimeno and part of the village of Tuoro, you won\u2019t miss the Chiesa di San Salvatore, with its simple, gentle and welcoming appearance.
