{"id":19534,"date":"2019-02-28T19:39:13","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T18:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/perugia\/what-to-see-in-perugia\/palazzo-del-capitano-del-popolo\/"},"modified":"2019-08-22T02:55:24","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T00:55:24","slug":"palazzo-del-capitano-del-popolo","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/perugia\/what-to-see-in-perugia\/palazzo-del-capitano-del-popolo\/","title":{"rendered":"Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This palace sits near <strong>Palazzo dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 Vecchia, <\/strong>with which it shares some architectural similarities like the ground floor arches that look on Piazza Matteotti, formerly <strong>Piazza del Soprammuro<\/strong> after the large retaining wall that was built to expand the new square.<\/p>\n<p>The palace was built between 1473 and 1481 by <em>Gasperino di Antonio <\/em>and<em> Leone di Matteo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing that stands-out is definitely the beautiful portal, similar to the one on Palazzo dei Priori. The facade features various architectural styles from different periods, due to the various restoration works on the original one which was lost in an earthquake during the XVIII Century.<\/p>\n<p>Initially the building was home to the <strong>Capitano del Popolo<\/strong>, &#8220;Captain of the People&#8221; in Italian, it was then used for various government offices.
