Go right to the end of Corso Vannucci where you\u2019ll find the gardens situated immediately after the \u2018palazzo della provincia\u2019, where part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/subcategories\/what-to-see-and-what-to-do-in-perugia\/#heading3525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rocca Paolina<\/strong><\/a> once stood. There\u2019s a monument in the centre to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pietro_Perugino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Pietro<\/em> <em>Perugino<\/em><\/a> and busts of <em>Giosu\u00e8 Carducci, Orazio Antinori, Galeazzo Alessi, Guglielmo Calderini <\/em>and<em> Pintoricchio.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo in Perugia it befell. Where dim in<\/p>\n<p>The shade of that stern pile the city lay,<\/p>\n<p>Love laugheth now, and merrily the women<\/p>\n<p>And children prattle in the sun of May.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And through the spacious azure ever higher<\/p>\n<p>The bright sun mounts, till far Abruzzi\u2019s snows<\/p>\n<p>Glisten, and yet with more intense desire<\/p>\n<p>Of love on Umbrian hill and pasture glows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Where in the rosy light serenely rising<\/p>\n<p>The mountains interweave their perfect lines,<\/p>\n<p>Until each tender contour melts and dies in<\/p>\n<p>The golden violet haze that o\u2019er them shines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Is \u2018t, Italy, thy fragrant hair strewn over<\/p>\n<p>They nuptial bed, \u2018twixt seas to east and west,<\/p>\n<p>Which \u2018neath the kisses of th\u2019 eternal lover<\/p>\n<p>Trembles in scattered ringlets to thy breast?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019er it be, I feel spring with me blending,<\/p>\n<p>And all my thoughts a sapphire radiance stains;<\/p>\n<p>I feel the sighs, ascending and descending<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Twixt earth and heaven, throb through my veins\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These verses were written by <em>Giosu\u00e9 Carducci<\/em> when, during his time in Perugia, he spent time in the gardens that are now named after him and where he was inspired to write this poem \u2018<strong>Canto dell\u2019Amore\u2019<\/strong> (The Song of Love), part of which is quoted above. In the verses, the poet traces the thirst for power and control that had led Pope Paul III to build <strong>Rocca Paolina<\/strong> and to suppress and crush every possible uprising in Perugia. As he explains in his poem, the \u201c&#8230; <em>people are a dog, which biteth the stones it cannot hurl\u2026 And specially on fortress delighteth to exercise its iron fangs<\/em>\u201d and so the Perugians have recovered their spaces, uprooting symbols of power to lovingly restore them to civic pride. Where the fortress once stood, now grass and flowers grow.<\/p>\n<p>You can enjoy some relaxation in these gardens, surrounded by greenery but still in the oldest part of the city. Looking out over the balustrade, there is a wonderful view of the southern part of Perugia, with its tapestry of houses merging seamlessly, in the distance, with the greenery of the Umbrian valley. And if you pass by at sunset, you\u2019ll see a unique sight, as the setting sun illuminates the greenery in the distance and gilds the city\u2019s travertine limestone buildings with its dying rays.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019ll feel inspired, like the poet, and overwhelmed by emotion.<\/p>\n<p>The Carducci gardens are a very popular place, both for tourists and locals, but they\u2019re never too crowded and always manage to offer visitors some welcome peace and quiet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At this point, having wandered along Corso Vannucci with its museums, magnificent palaces and imposing churches, you\u2019re tired and want a place to relax for a while \u2013without missing out on the chance to admire yet another unique sight \u2013 the Carducci Gardens are just what you need!
