{"id":19489,"date":"2019-03-14T19:56:46","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T18:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/gubbio\/cosa-vedere-a-gubbio\/duomo\/"},"modified":"2019-08-22T02:05:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T00:05:04","slug":"duomo","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/gubbio\/cosa-vedere-a-gubbio\/duomo\/","title":{"rendered":"Duomo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<strong> Duomo di Gubbio<\/strong> was built between the 13<sup>th<\/sup> and 14<sup>th<\/sup> centuries at the foot of Mount Igino, on the site of a previous Romanesque church, and dedicated to the Saints Mariano and Giacomo Martiri.<\/p>\n<p>The building has a very elegant Gothic style. Access is through a large central portal with a pointed arch surmounted by a very large circular window, with an ornament floral frame and the symbols of the four evangelists and of the Lamb of God all around.<\/p>\n<p>The inside of the church has a single nave and a ceiling with transverse pointed arches which were built following 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century restoration work. Along the side walls, there are small chapels, including the noteworthy <strong>Cappella del Santissimo Sacramento<\/strong>, built in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century at the behest of Bishop <em>Alessandro Sperelli<\/em>, decorated with frescoes by the local painter <em>Francesco Allegrini<\/em> and the <strong>Nascita della Vergine<\/strong> (Birth of the Virgin) by <em>Gherardi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On the right wall there are still valuable traces of 14<sup>th<\/sup>-century frescoes and the <strong>Immacolata Concezione<\/strong> by <em>Virgilio Nucci<\/em> painted in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, while on the left wall there is an altar created with a recycled Roman sarcophagus depicting St Ubaldo.<\/p>\n<p>The ornate presbyterial area is also worth a visit: on the choir there is an Episcopal Seat carved in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, while under the high altar a precious late ancient sarcophagus preserves the remains of the Cathedral\u2019s two patron saints.
