{"id":19370,"date":"2019-08-19T19:04:47","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T17:04:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/?page_id=19370"},"modified":"2019-08-19T19:04:47","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T17:04:47","slug":"teatro-mancinelli","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.exploring-umbria.com\/en\/discover-orvieto\/discover-orvieto\/teatro-mancinelli\/","title":{"rendered":"Teatro Mancinelli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Corso Cavour, n. 122, a few steps from the Orvieto\u2019s Duomo, stands the beautiful neoclassical <strong>Teatro Cittadino<\/strong>, a fine example of 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century architecture.<\/p>\n<p>It was built in 1838, at the behest of a group of citizens who decided to establish an association for the construction of a real theatre in the city. The design and construction of the theatre in elegant neoclassical style were entrusted to <em>Virginio Vespignani<\/em>, a well-known architect responsible for restorations of many of Orvieto\u2019s palazzi.<\/p>\n<p>Before this date and starting from the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, theatre was performed on the upper floor room of the Palazzo del Popolo, on a wooden structure that, however, eventually proved inadequate. The actors who performed for years on Orvieto\u2019s stages were part of two associations, the first was called \u2018<em>degli Scemi<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018<em>dei Confusi<\/em>\u2019 and was replaced by the second called \u2018<em>dei Misti<\/em>\u2019, in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>Internally, the theatre has large, elegant rooms that perfectly reflect the monumental appearance of the external facade. On the entrance stairway there are busts of four important figures: the architect <em>Vespignani<\/em> who designed the theatre, the painter <em>Fracassini<\/em> to whom we owe the beautiful painting of the theatrical curtain, and the two brothers <em>Marino<\/em> and <em>Luigi Mancinelli<\/em>.
